Since the 90s, minimalism reigned supreme on the global catwalks: Over a decade of the most desirable fashionable looks being from Calvin Klein, Armani, Céline, Helmut Lang and more recently, The Row. Throughout this time, South Asian fashion never fully gave in to minimalism and our style choices could not easily be devoid of some kind of bling that always finds itself in our accessories, clothing and jewelry! But whether it’s due to the Alessandro Michele/Gucci influence or a desire for bolder, brighter, more textured clothes for the visually led Insta generation, maximalism is well and truly back on trend. This is great news for us desis, as we never really, fully, embraced minimalism for our style choices, and now its our time to shine!
Seventies-inspired silhouettes and prints have trickled down from high fashion to high street over the past few years, however, the last couple of seasons have also seen a return to the ‘8os, with the resurgence of disco fashion and high-octane glamour, glitter, sequins and feathers, fringe and tassels. Our designers have quickly adapted some of these trends magically to Spring’s clothing collections, with others choosing to keep them for accessories.
Kim Kardashian’s shoot for Vogue India, wearing a bright red sequined Sabyasachi sari is sure to make the trend more mainstream.
